ROAD JOURNAL: LOS ANGELES
We traveled out to LA for the Gameoverse Premiere!
We traveled out to LA to attend and film the theatrical premiere of Gameoverse, an animated pilot led by Ross O'Donovan and released by GLITCH that now has 14M+ views on YouTube!
____________
MAY 11 – FLYING TO LA
Flew out non-stop to LAX. Braved LA traffic up to my Airbnb, which is a bedroom in a Mexican lady’s condo. Met up with a local friend, bought junk food at a local grocery store, and spent the evening watching Cleaners, a neat stylized 2019 film from the Philippines that I randomly found on Tubi.
MAY 12 – CHILLING
An inconspicuous day. Traveled over to Forest Lawn, a gorgeous cemetery. Walked the grounds while conspiring how I could possibly work there for the rest of my life. Found the private mausoleum where MJ is buried, noted by all of the flowers and letters people leave on the outside of it. I wonder how often they dispose of those. Is it a monthly thing where they get rid of everything left on the doorstep? Or do they pace it out so that the older mementos get disposed of to make way for newer ones, so that it always has tributes in that area? The world may never know.
Also met up with cool-ass NG artist spicybagel, who makes the cool-ass comic strip Worm Castle and makes cool-ass music. He's a cool-ass guy. CHECK HIM OUT: https://spicybagel.newgrounds.com/
May 13 – SCOUT DAY
Scouted out the Game Grumps office and AMC theater for tomorrow, the big shooting day. Got a few sit-down interviews planned at the office, then getting coverage of the premiere with a local cameraman. Met with a few of the Grumps staff, all of whom seem to be very sweet peeps.
MAY 14 – FILMING
It was a non-stop day.
Got to the Grumps office and had three sit-down interviews: Ross, Arin, and Bacun (lead character designer, who opted for an audio-only interview) within five hours. .
Drove straight to the AMC, where I met up with Lou, a local guy who agreed to camera op for this event. We got some really good coverage of Ross before and after the premiere, as well as some really cool B-roll.
I admit that the first half of the episode my attention was more focused on getting the shots we needed, but once my full attention was grabbed, it was hooked. It is really well done, has obviously had a lot of time and effort put into making it as good as it can be, and it was so cool to be able to celebrate that with the people who made it. Most of the moments we’ve gotten up to now have been focused on people telling stories, so to have the privilege to capture such a special event in real time – it was truly a pleasure.
(I’ve since seen the full episode undistracted, and absolutely love it!)
(sorry if this pic looks AI lol, it’s my only BTS photo from the screening, and the low-light theater meant a slow shutter on my iPhone cam)
_____
And that’s concludes our stint of pickup interviews for the month! There are just a couple loose ends we have to tie up before the film is completed, but we have enough to get a more rounded out cut of the film done! Stay tuned…
All the best,
Conner
P.S. If you haven’t seen the Gameoverse pilot yet, you really should:
